Connecting Lakeshore

On April 29, 2006, a unique cultural event took place in the windows and on the sidewalks of New Toronto, as well as within the Waterfront Trail Artists' own art centre and in the local public library. This grand celebration of creativity throughout the lakeshore included art-making workshops, storytelling, a poetry reading, an historical talk, a puppet show, an umbrella parade, and a public viewing of specially commissioned artwork displayed in shop windows along Lake Shore Boulevard West.

Exhibitions

In 2002, Toronto arts practitioner Rochelle Holt curated an exhibition entitled Breathwork, inviting artists to respond to contemporary environmental concerns. Participating artists were Ron Edding, Charles Hong-Jen Yi, Wendy Lilly, Debbie O'Rourke, Pam Patterson, Adrienne Reynolds, Tegan Smith, Ilona Staples, and Charmaine Wheatley.

In 2001, Eric Field curated Quodlibet, whose title referred to the musical technique of juxtaposing fragments from a variety of sources, and which reflected the show's unity in diversity. Participating artists were Sandy Brand, Ethel Christensen, Liliana DeIrisarri, Luci Dilkus, David Golden, Jaga Jarosiewicz, Ken Kettlewell, Wendy Lilly, Lorna Livey, Glen Presley, Istvan Rész, Pat Rice, Walt Ruston, and Roberta Storms.

In 1999, Jennifer Rudder curated an exhibition entitled Celebration, showcasing WTA members' works inspired by their creators' experiences of living in a waterfront community. Participating artists were Ethel Christensen, Eric Field, Kenneth Fuentes, Ken Kettlewell, Wendy Lilly, Lorna Livey, Marjorie Park, Walt Ruston, Roberta Storms, and Barb Symons.

Artist Talks

Toronto artists from a variety of disciplines have delivered talks at the Fifth Street Gallery (formerly 145 Fifth Street in New Toronto). Presenters have included printmaker Susan Cunningham, performance artist Paul Couillard, installation artist Louise Noguchi, and visual artist Jadwiga Jarosiewicz. Attendance has been free for WTA members and pay-what-you-can for non-members.
